The Fix
A disposal that grinds, hums without spinning, or won't reset anymore is usually past the point of a quick fix — and replacing the whole unit is a very doable weekend project, not a plumber-required job.
Before You Buy a New Unit
Check the reset button on the bottom of the unit first, and make sure it's not just a tripped breaker or a jammed impeller (a disposal wrench or hex key in the bottom socket can often free a stuck jam). If it still won't run after that, it's time to replace it.
What the Swap Involves
Disconnecting the dishwasher drain line, unmounting the old unit from the mounting ring under the sink, and mounting the new one — most modern disposals, including InSinkErator's lineup, use the same twist-lock mounting system, so a same-brand replacement usually reuses the existing ring entirely.
The One Step People Skip
Plumber's putty (or the included gasket, depending on the model) under the sink flange is what keeps the whole assembly from leaking later. Don't rush that part just because the electrical and mounting work is done.
